The Apple Mac Pro “M2 Ultra” 24 CPU/76 GPU (Rack) was introduced in 2023. The M2 Ultra chip, which is essentially dual M2 Max processors on a single die, is the centerpiece of this Mac Pro. It boasts 134 billion transistors and offers configurations with a 24-core CPU and a choice between a 60-core or 76-core GPU. This immense processing power is capable of handling up to 22 streams of uncompressed 8K video simultaneously, or multitasking between demanding applications that would typically require separate machines.
In terms of memory and storage, the Mac Pro “M2 Ultra” comes with up to 192GB of unified memory and up to 8TB of solid-state storage. Unlike other Mac desktops, such as the Mac Studio, the storage in this model can be upgraded post-purchase, thanks to SSD slots on the motherboard’s back side. However, it’s important to note that these are proprietary SSDs, and third-party SSDs are not compatible due to SOC encryption.
The Mac Pro also features extensive expansion capabilities, with six full-length PCI Express 4 slots available for a range of professional hardware needs, from audio recording to studio-grade video gear. An additional half-length PCIe slot can be freed up by removing the standard I/O card.
For external connectivity, the Mac Pro supports up to eight 4K displays at 60Hz or up to three 8K panels at the same refresh rate. It includes eight Thunderbolt 4 connections, two USB Type-A ports, two HDMI ports, two 10Gbps Ethernet ports, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Internally, there’s an additional USB-A port and what appear to be two 6Gbps SATA ports, though their specific use wasn’t clarified.
The Mac Pro also features the latest in wireless connectivity with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. It comes with an Apple Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse.
The design of the Mac Pro remains largely unchanged from the previous Intel model from 2019, retaining the distinctive “cheese grater” lattice across the front and the slide-off case for easy access to internals. Additionally, there’s an option for a server rackmount setup, and for added mobility, the desktop can be equipped with wheels.
The Apple Mac Pro “M2 Ultra” 24 CPU/76 GPU (Rack) comes standard with 64 GB of unified onboard RAM, offering robust memory capabilities for demanding applications. It features a 1 TB SSD for fast data access and storage. The RAM and SSD are configurable at purchase, with options up to 192 GB for RAM and up to 8 TB for SSD. However, these components are not user-upgradable after purchase.
This Mac Pro model, being rack-mountable, does not include an integrated display. However, its 76-core GPU supports extensive display capabilities, accommodating up to eight 4K displays, six 6K displays, or three 8K displays simultaneously. This feature is particularly beneficial for professionals requiring a large, high-resolution multi-monitor setup.
Running on macOS 13.4, the Mac Pro is powered by a 3.68 GHz Apple M2 Ultra processor. This 64-bit SoC comprises 24 cores (16 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores), a 76-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine. The processor is complemented by a Media Engine for enhanced video encoding and decoding capabilities.
The device ships with 64 GB of unified RAM, based on a 64-bit architecture. The RAM is configurable at the time of purchase up to 128 GB or 192 GB but is not upgradable post-purchase due to its soldered nature.
The Mac Pro’s macOS can be updated to the latest version. While initial configurations allow for RAM and SSD upgrades, these are not user-serviceable after purchase. The model boasts a variety of connectivity options, including Thunderbolt 4 and USB-A ports, HDMI ports, and 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports, along with Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. Internally, it offers six full-length PCI Express Gen 4 slots and one half-length x4 PCI Express Gen 3 slot for hardware expansion.
