Apple introduced the Mac Pro “M2 Ultra” 24-Core CPU/60-Core GPU (Rack-Mountable) on June 5, 2023. This high-end workstation is designed for professional users requiring exceptional processing and graphics capabilities.The heart of the Mac Pro M2 Ultra is its 64-bit Apple M2 Ultra processor. This powerful chip features 24 cores, comprising 16 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores, and operates at an estimated speed of 3.68 GHz. Accompanying the CPU is a robust 60-core GPU, designed to handle intensive graphics tasks with ease. The machine also includes a 32-core Neural Engine, which significantly enhances machine learning capabilities. The memory bandwidth of this model is an impressive 800 GB/s.   

For video professionals, the Mac Pro M2 Ultra includes a specialized “Media Engine” that provides hardware acceleration for video encoding and decoding. This includes two video decode engines, four video encode engines, and four ProRes encode and decode engines, making it an ideal choice for video editing and production tasks.  

The Mac Pro comes standard with 64 GB of “unified” onboard RAM, which can be configured up to 192 GB at the time of purchase. However, it’s important to note that the RAM is not user-upgradable after purchase. For storage, it starts with a 1 TB SSD, which can be upgraded using Apple’s Mac Pro SSD upgrade kit. The SSD offers a high-speed data transfer rate of 7.4 GB/s.    

In terms of connectivity, the Mac Pro M2 Ultra is well-equipped. It features two Thunderbolt 4 ports on the front and four on the back, along with two USB-A ports, two HDMI ports, and two 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports. It also includes a 3.5 mm headphone jack. For wireless connectivity, it supports 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6E) and Bluetooth 5.3.  

Internally, the Mac Pro offers extensive expansion capabilities. It includes one USB-A port and two Serial ATA ports for additional storage. There are also six full-length PCI Express Gen 4 slots for further expansion, providing ample room for additional hardware and storage solutions.  

The Mac Pro supports up to eight displays simultaneously, with varying resolutions depending on the number and type of displays connected. It can support up to three 8K displays, six 6K displays, or eight 4K displays.  

This rack-mountable model is designed for integration into professional studio environments. It has a robust and durable design, with dimensions of 8.67 x 18.98 x 21.24 inches and an average weight of 37.9 lbs (17.21 kg). The Mac Pro runs on macOS 13.4 and supports virtualization for running Windows applications.
