Presuming your external drive is connected via USB 2 or 3 or by FireWire, when you turn the drive on it should appear as an icon on your Mac desktop. When it does just double click on the icon and it should open a window of the drive’s contents. Then simply drag whatever files you want from the desktop into the drive window.
I do this all the time for backing up and copying photos etc.
