About this Apple Watch
The Apple Watch Ultra 2, introduced on September 12, 2023, is an enhanced version of its predecessor, designed for sports and outdoor enthusiasts. It maintains a robust design with a 49mm titanium case and a brighter display, offering up to 3000 nits of brightness. This model is unique for its independence from a tethered iPhone, though it still pairs best with an iPhone XS or later running iOS 17 for full functionality.
Key advancements include the S9 chip with a four-core Neural Engine, enhancing performance and enabling new features like the double tap gesture control and a more responsive Siri. The Ultra 2’s sports tracking capabilities remain impressive, with added support for cycling sensors and enhanced diving features. It still offers multi-band GNSS for accurate outdoor tracking and includes updates in the Compass app for improved navigation, although it still lacks some advanced navigation features found in competitors.
In terms of health and wellness, the Ultra 2 continues to offer ECG, heart rate warnings, and crash/fall detection but doesn’t significantly advance in health monitoring compared to other brands. Battery life is estimated at up to 36 hours, extendable to 72 hours in Low Power Mode.
The watch is environmentally conscious, with a case made from 95% recycled titanium and carbon-neutral options available for certain bands. However, its design is seen as more masculine and less appealing for those with slimmer wrists.
